About Efile 720
Efile 720 is an IRS-authorized online portal for filing Form 720 and Form 8849 federal excise tax returns. The IRS has indicated that electronic filing is the preferred method, as paper submissions are experiencing significant delays and, in some cases, are no longer being processed.

Based on the IRS Inspector General's 2026 filing season readiness report, the IRS is dealing with significantly reduced staffing and record-breaking, unprecedented processing backlogs. Taxpayers are strongly advised to refrain from sending any Forms 720 or 8849 by paper, as paper-filed submissions increase the likelihood of processing delays, automatically generated penalties, and audit review. Excise tax returns and refund claims should be filed electronically through the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) system using an IRS-authorized e-file provider to obtain IRS approval within minutes.
Under Executive Order 14247, the federal government is modernizing payment systems by phasing out paper refund checks in favor of electronic payments. As part of this initiative, the IRS is reducing reliance on paper submissions and paper refunds to improve security, efficiency, and processing timelines.
Over 5 million excise tax e-filings processed through our IRS-approved system
